"Best in Show"...at the Gumtree Museum of Art!

Humbled that my painting, Windshear- Tupelo Airport  won the "Best in Show" at the Mississippi Painter's Society Exhibit at the Gumtree Museum of Art this past Friday night with:  (see better image here) 
It was Friday the 13th but I'm not superstitious!  I'm truly humbled to win. Also another painting that I did placed 2nd place ... "B&B Concrete Co."

Congrats to friends Judy Tuci's pastel 1st; Rhonda Grammer's watercolor, 2rd; and Bruce Bigelow -Honorable Mention... MANY many beautiful works in this show without ribbons... If you can - please go by to see this show...It ends Sept 14th!

Seashores and a Sense of Place

Sometimes it is difficult for an artist to communicate verbally to non-artists. Like the retired airline pilot I was talking to on the phone today. I was describing waves and beach colors in terms like "warm and cool colors" and "atmospheric density at the horizon", etc. It was clear that these descriptive terms were confusing him. Painting my Life's Story: Digging Deep

A collector from Chicago wrote me today asking for more detailed information about another one of my works. I've never met her, she bought one of my paintings years ago in a gallery that represented me at that time. Her questions made me wonder if others would like more information about me and the inspiration behind my paintings.  I know my work is contemporary in one sense.... but it comes across as nostalgic as well. That is an unusual combination these days. It's only contemporary in the way that I paint. It is ALL nostalgic scenery and I do not make excuses for painting what is real to me and my life. It is who I am.. I OWN the fact that I paint in a way that expresses my personal narrative, my internal story, and what a scene feels like and personally means to me. Artist Workshops My husband Jackie and I host workshops for artists.  If you are an artist you understand about workshops. If you are not a painter, just think of it as education and continuing education for artists. These workshops are for students, intermediate artists and professionals. Sometimes the students are professional artists studying with another artist that they admire. Sometimes even the professional artist instructors themselves study with the other professional artists that they admire! No artist ever stops learning and we all learn a lot from each other.  I see lots of different styles of painting and work that I admire and their work styles range a lot.
